Equatorial Guinea’s Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), Baltasar Engonga, has been arrested following allegations of recording more than 400 explicit videos with spouses of prominent public figures in the country.

The scandal unfolded amid a separate fraud investigation into the 54-year-old Engonga, during which authorities reportedly uncovered a trove of CDs containing explicit footage at his home and office.

According to Africanews, the recordings included high-ranking officials’ spouses, such as the wife of the Director General of Police, close family members and relatives of senior government figures, including the sister of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

Engonga allegedly filmed these encounters in various locations, including his office, with reports indicating that the national flag was sometimes visible in the background.

Though reportedly consensual, the videos have since leaked online, sparking widespread public outrage and media scrutiny.

Ahora EG described the revelations as unprecedented, exposing “flagrant violations” of ethical standards by a senior official.

Nicknamed “Bello,” Engonga’s arrest has ignited a national controversy involving high-profile individuals.

In response, Equatorial Guinea’s Attorney General Nzang Nguema clarified that consensual relations without coercion are not criminal but emphasized the health risks posed by Engonga’s alleged activities.

He underscored the government’s focus on supporting any reports of non-consensual encounters or abuse.

Following the scandal, the government quickly suspended officials involved in sexual conduct within ministry offices, declaring a “zero tolerance” policy for behavior that undermines public trust.

Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue condemned the actions in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the importance of ethics and integrity in public service.

This high-profile scandal has led to calls for a reinforced commitment to professional and ethical standards within government institutions, with officials aiming to prevent further breaches of public trust and ensure a respectful workplace culture.
