Standards Agency seizes, destroys unsafe electrical items in Lusaka

Seized non-compliant electrical products valued at K42,090 have been destroyed in Lusaka by the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA).

ZCSA seized the items, including electric cables, adaptors and household appliances like kettles, plate cookers and toasters, in May this year.

These products were withdrawn from Kamwala Trading area, Oasis, Westgate and Levy Malls in Lusaka for failing to meet compulsory standards.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, ZCSA Public Relations Officer, Onishias Maamba, explained that 56 plugs, sockets and adaptors did not meet required color coding, while 1,442 items were found to be non-compliant with Zambian Standard 558 for plugs, socket outlets, adaptors and connection units.

“The products were seized during an enforcement exercise for posing a risk to public safety. Potential hazards included personal injury, electric shock, fire, and property damage,” Maamba said.

He added that ZCSA would continue enforcement to prevent unsafe products from reaching the market and warned of stern action against traders supplying non-compliant goods.
