Zambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, has called on member states of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) to enhance collaborative efforts in addressing ongoing conflicts, which he emphasized as crucial for advancing the region’s peace and integration agenda.
Speaking through Defense Minister Ambrose Lufuma at the 19th COMESA Committee of Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meeting in Bujumbura on Tuesday, Haimbe underscored the need for regional unity in tackling conflicts that threaten stability.
The meeting marked Zambia’s handover of the COMESA Foreign Affairs Committee chairmanship.
“The ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan are of great concern. These challenges highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to regional peace,” Haimbe stated.
He stressed the importance of dialogue among warring parties and a coordinated response rooted in “African Solutions to African Problems.”
Burundi’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Albert Shingiro, the incoming COMESA chair, reaffirmed Burundi’s commitment to supporting regional peace efforts.
Meanwhile, COMESA Secretary-General, Chileshe Kapwepwe, highlighted recent initiatives promoting stability across the 21-member trade bloc.
“While progress has been made, volatility remains in several areas, demanding continued attention and collective action,” Kapwepwe said.
He noted the importance of sustained commitment to peace and security for a prosperous future in the COMESA region.
