President Hakainde Hichilema has called for unity as he attended the Shimunenga Traditional Ceremony in Namwala, Southern Province, on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, Hichilema urged traditional leaders to collaborate in fostering unity across the nation to facilitate development in all 116 districts.

He stated the critical role of traditional leaders in inspiring unity among their communities.

“Let us unite the country to achieve development in all areas. When chiefs are united, their subjects will follow and embrace unity as well,” President Hichilema stated.

He acknowledged the traditional leaders’ resilience during Zambia’s recent drought, described as one of the worst in living memory.

Hichilema expressed appreciation for their tolerance and reassured them that no one would be left to suffer from hunger.

“We thank you, traditional leaders, for your tolerance during this dry spell, the worst in recent memory. Be assured that no one will die of hunger,” he added.

The President also highlighted the importance of education, urging parents to ensure every child attends school now that free education is available.

“With free education in place, let us make sure every child goes to school,” Hichilema said.

The Shimunenga ceremony, a cherished cultural tradition of the Ila people of Maala in Namwala District, is celebrated on the weekend of the full moon each September or October.

The ceremony honors Shimunenga, a legendary warrior remembered for defending his people’s territory.

At dawn on the first day, attendees gather at Shimunenga’s shrine to chant traditional songs as animals are released, marking the event’s climax.
