Tragic accident claims lives of 7 Chavuma football players, 12 others injured

Seven players from Chavuma Town Council Football Club lost their lives and 12 others were injured in a tragic accident en route to a Week 8 match in the North Western Province Division One League.

Chavuma District Commissioner, Geoffrey Kasonda, confirmed the incident to the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ).

In a statement issued from Lusaka on Saturday, FAZ president, Andrew Kamanga, expressed shock and sadness at the news, noting that he had spent the day in North Western Province as a guest of honor at the Sentinel Academy launch in Kalumbila.

“I am deeply saddened by the accident involving Chavuma Council Football Club that has led to seven deaths,” Kamanga stated. “The news is devastating, especially after spending the weekend with the football family in Kalumbila.

” Kamanga added that FAZ was working closely with local authorities to gather complete details on the incident.

FAZ Communications Manager, Sydney Mungala, reported that the injured players were rushed to Chavuma District Hospital for treatment.

“The team’s bus overturned between Lukhunyi and Ndondo in Chavuma District while they were traveling to face Mufumbwe Marketeers,” Mungala said.

Assistant Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, confirmed in a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace Quantum, registration number AID 6983ZM, which was transporting Chavuma Town Council football players and some officials from Chavuma to Mufumbwe for a match.

“The vehicle was driven by Chilobe Brian, a 30-year-old male from Zambezi Township, who is among the deceased,” Chilabi stated.

He added that investigations indicated that the accident occurred when the driver, operating the mentioned motor vehicle was driving at an excessive speed and later lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn three times in the opposite lane before coming to rest on its wheels.

“The driver sustained fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said. Chilabi said in addition to the driver, the other six deceased were identified as:

1. Makina Gedion, 26, of Chavuma Centre

2. Chiteta Raymond, 22, of Chavuma Centre

3. Kanshimba Kenneth, 38, of Chavuma Centre (employee of Chavuma Town Council)

4. Kapalu Donny, 30, of Chavuma Centre

5. Steven Tembo, 21, of Chavuma Centre

6. Kaumba Chitale, 20, of Chavuma Centre.

Those that sustained injuries and were admitted for treatment included:

3. Kamilembwe Ernest, 25

4. Siasingele Jimmy, 30

5. Makina Elijah, 36

6. Muyutu Hebex, 19

7. Sakala Blessings, 32

8. Musa Simunga, 31

10. Chinyama Kahokola, 21

11. Ndungu Joel, 24

12. Kabambi Peter, 17
