Hichilema pardons 859 inmates as Zambia marks 60th independence anniversary

Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu, has announced that President Hakainde Hichilema has pardoned 859 inmates as part of Zambia’s 60th independence celebrations.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Wednesday, Mwiimbu revealed that of the pardoned inmates, 808 were males and 51 were females.

He added that 840 were ordinary inmates, seven were female inmates with circumstantial children, nine were elderly and three were foreign nationals.

Mwiimbu explained that the President exercised his prerogative of mercy in accordance with Article 97 of the Constitution.

Additionally, the minister noted that the Zambia Correctional Services, in collaboration with the Judiciary, was considering the introduction of correctional courts to bring access to justice closer to inmates.
