The British government has committed to providing technical support to assist Zambia in implementing the Cash for Work (CfW) social protection empowerment programme.

Acting British High Commissioner to Zambia, Sam Waldock, expressed his government’s interest in CfW during a recent meeting with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

Speaking to Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu, Waldock highlighted the positive impact CfW has had on vulnerable individuals and households since its launch.

“We are delighted with the results of social protection programmes like CfW and the Social Cash Transfer Scheme, which have visibly improved the lives of the vulnerable, especially amid the ongoing drought,” Waldock said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday.

He said the UK was eager to support Zambia through partnerships that aimed to enhance food security and provide financial relief to those most in need.

Waldock also praised the role of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in empowering local communities to take charge of their development initiatives.

In response, Haamaundu reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to elevate the social and economic status of its citizens, particularly those affected by the 2023/2024 drought.

“As a result of the adverse effects of the 2023/2024 drought, the large proportion of the population needs food at household levels,” he highlighted.

He urged more partners to offer support to expand social protection initiatives and create income-generating opportunities for vulnerable households.
