After a prolonged period of drama and frustration due to delayed results, Dixon Mutambo, popularly known as Governor, has emerged victorious in the 2024 University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) presidential elections.

The results came with unexpected twists, as earlier speculation had suggested that Peter Chabu, who ran as ‘Chabu Chabu’, had won just hours before the official announcement.

University students eagerly awaited the official results, with many rooting for one of the two frontrunners, Chabu Chabu or Governor, from a total of eight candidates.

The union elections sparked excitement both on campus and across social media.

Local celebrities, including Chanda Na Kay and Chile One, with his girlfriend, were seen performing Governor’s campaign song on their TikTok accounts.

Chabu Chabu, running with the slogan “Power to the People,” posed a tough challenge to Governor, who campaigned with “With Governor for me, Governor for all.”

The announcement of the winner has shut down social media, with political enthusiasts and “goblins” discussing the elections.

The fierce competition between Governor and Chabu Chabu had fueled debates over the significance of student leadership in broader political contexts.

The results also drew unexpected attention, with prominent figures like Myles Sampa prematurely congratulating Chabu Chabu on his “victory” before the official results were released.

“Congratulations are in order to the newly elected UNZASU President, Dr. Peter Chabu. Chi UNZASU! Chiyasha! 😊 (that was our chant back in the day),” Sampa posted.

Contrary to Sampa’s message, the official announcement declared Governor the winner, after which students rushed to Great East Road to celebrate the new UNZASU president.
