The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has reported a tragic fire at Tokyo Way Market, Ring Road near Misisi Shoprite, which claimed two lives after two stalls caught fire in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to LCC Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba, concerned members of the public alerted authorities to the fire approximately 40 minutes after midnight.
The Fire Brigade, in collaboration with State Police, responded swiftly and managed to extinguish the blaze as the fire load was minimal.
“The source of the fire has not yet been determined, but the flames were coming from furniture, tyres, and brooms stored inside the stalls,” Mwamba said in a statement.

The stall owners, identified as John Chilufya and Max Ngandu, arrived at the scene and confirmed that each stall had been manned by a worker, who are believed to be the victims of the fire.
The two bodies have since been taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary.
Mwamba noted that the extent of the damage was still under investigation.
