Nasson Msoni, leader of All Peoples Congress (APC), has condemned the continued detention of Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary-General, Raphael Nakacinda, calling it illegal and a violation of human rights.

Msoni alleged that Nakacinda was a victim of political intrigues under the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), accusing the government of practicing “politics of regional compliance.”

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Msoni claimed that, under the UPND’s approach, Nakacinda was not expected to be a member of PF or work against President Hakainde Hichilema.

He further alleged that Nakacinda’s association with former president Edgar Lungu, whom the UPND views as a political adversary, had worsened his situation.

“The continued holding of Nakacinda hostage by the police in detention is illegal and is calculated to punish and break him into submission,” Msoni said.

He expressed confusion over why Nakacinda was being singled out for making political statements similar to those of other politicians, calling it a clear case of retribution.

Msoni suggested that Nakacinda was being punished for not supporting UPND or Hichilema, especially given that they share the same regional background, implying he was expected to align with the ruling party.

“The continued detention of Nakacinda is illegal and seriously breaches his human rights. We demand his immediate and unconditional release,” Msoni urged.

Nakacinda was arrested for alleged seditious practices, according to Zambia Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.

The charges fall under Section 57(1)(b) and Section 60(1)(j) of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
