President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving Zambia’s cultural heritage and national values, emphasizing their importance in driving the country’s development agenda.

Speaking during the Mtomolo traditional ceremony of the Namwanga people in Nakonde District on Sunday, President Hichilema stressed that national values should be upheld at all times to ensure development was achieved with a forward-thinking attitude.

“National values are a crucial aspect of our government’s agenda to push the economic agenda forward. We cannot separate culture from development, as it is our values that shape our vision for progress,” President Hichilema said.

The President expressed satisfaction with Nakonde District’s agricultural achievements, citing strong performance in the 2023-2024 farming season.

He also pledged government support for irrigation schemes in the border town, which are key to boosting agricultural output amid the ongoing drought crisis.

“I am elated that this district has recorded impressive agricultural performance. The government remains focused on expanding irrigation projects to enhance food production and protect livelihoods from the impacts of climate change,” he added.

Chieftainess Waitwika, speaking through her representative, Blackwell Silwenga, commended the government for its recent announcement of a commercial airport to be constructed in Nakonde, a project outlined in the 2025 national budget.

The Chieftainess emphasized that the airport would significantly enhance the local transport sector and increase revenue collection in the border town.

She also noted that the development aligned with the government’s rural development strategy and will create employment for local residents.

“The construction of a commercial airport will not only improve transportation but also stimulate economic activity, providing much-needed jobs for the people of Nakonde,” she said.

Chieftainess Waitwika further praised the ongoing construction of a new palace in the district, describing the project as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving local infrastructure.

President Hichilema’s participation in the ceremony marks a historic moment, as he was the first Republican President to officiate at the Mtomolo traditional ceremony since Zambia’s independence.
