Three members of the same family tragically lost their lives in a house fire in Kitwe’s Nkana East on the night of September 25, 2024, leaving behind an 11-month-old infant who was miraculously rescued.

According to a joint statement issued by the Zambia Police and Kitwe authorities on Thursday, the fire was reported at 21:25 and involved a three-bedroom house.

Upon receiving the distressed call, a coordinated response was launched by the Fire Brigade, Copperbelt Energy Corporation, and Mopani Copper Mines Fire Brigade.

“Despite their prompt and tireless efforts, the fire resulted in devastating casualties,” the statement said.

The deceased have been identified as Benedict Bwalya (72), Josephine Nachula Bwalya (60), and Mutale Bwalya (40).

“However, in this tragic event, there was a glimmer of hope as an 11-month-old infant was rescued when her mother managed to pass her through a window to a neighbor, who took the infant to safety,” the statement continued.

The infant was rushed to Wusakile Mine Hospital by Mopani paramedics and is currently in stable condition.

Preliminary reports suggested the fire originated in the kitchen and rapidly spread throughout the house, destroying household goods.

The exact cause of the fire remained unknown, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities have urged the community to remain vigilant, report potential fire hazards and prioritise safety in their homes.
