President Hakainde Hichilema has commended the people of Kabalenge and Chidi wards in Mwansabombwe and Zimba districts for their peaceful campaigns during the recently concluded local government by-elections, held on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
In a statement issued by State House Chief Communications Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka, on Friday, President Hichilema also praised the various political parties for conducting issue-based, violence-free campaigns, noting a positive shift from the previously violent nature of election periods.
The President stated the importance of political competition being based on ideas and policies rather than violence.
“Political competition should be based on issues and not violence as was the case in the yesteryears,” he stated.
President Hichilema went on to congratulate the United Party for National Development (UPND) for securing both local government seats in the by-elections.
He acknowledged the efforts of the campaign teams and party structures in ensuring a peaceful and successful election process.
He further urged the newly elected UPND councilors to prioritise the needs of the people, especially as the government continues to devolve resources to local communities through the Constituency Development Funds (CDF).
“It is now time to deliver on your promises and serve your communities with diligence,” the President added.
The two by-elections took place following vacancies in the Kabalenge and Chidi wards, where peaceful voting was reported across the board.
