Political rift deepens in United Kwacha Alliance, with expulsion of three council members

Political tensions have escalated within the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) following the expulsion of three Council of Presidents members for their reported affiliations with other political alliances.

The expelled members are Peter Sinkamba of the Green Party, Dr. Dan Pule of the Christian Democratic Party (CDP), and Sean Tembo of the Patriots for Economic Progress (PEP).

Sakwiba Sikota, the UKA Chairperson, announced the expulsions in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, following a consultative meeting held at the Alliance’s Secretariat in Woodlands.

Sikota said the UKA members, including Presidents, senior officials and office bearers, were prohibited from joining or being members of other political alliances.

“The objective of UKA is to present a united front to address maladministration and extreme poverty created by the UPND Government,” Sikota stated.

He underscored that UKA was open to collaborating with various groups, including political parties, religious organizations, civil society, trade unions, non-governmental organizations, student bodies, bus drivers, marketeers, and ordinary Zambians for the country’s future.

Sikota explained that Apostle Dan Pule, a senior member of UKA, had disclosed his involvement in the Tonse Alliance, rendering his continued membership in UKA untenable.

“Consequently, Apostle Pule cannot continue being a member of UKA,” Sikota announced.

He also criticized Sean Tembo for his role as a promoter of the Tonse Alliance and for allegedly undermining fellow Council members.

Sikota stressed that the core purpose of UKA was to consolidate political efforts to present a unified strategy and reduce the number of political players, thereby avoiding an overwhelming number of candidates.

“UKA dissociates itself from President Sean Tembo and President Peter Sinkamba,” Sikota said. He added that the Council resolved to recruit new members from outside the participating political parties to strengthen and expand the alliance’s base.

Sikota reaffirmed UKA’s commitment to working closely with various political parties including PF, ULP, CF, GPZ, NHP, NDC, FDD, NRP, and RDC to address the issues caused by the current UPND administration.

The recent departures of New Congress leader, Peter Chanda and United for a Better Zambia party member, Hector Sondo, further underscore the growing instability within the alliance.
