Consumer association urges govt to provide affordable alternative energy solutions for all

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has called on the government to implement a comprehensive and affordable alternative energy source package, noting that not all consumers can afford to switch to other energy sources.

In response to President Hakainde Hichilema’s suggestion that load shedding should be seen as an opportunity to diversify the energy portfolio, ZACA contended that financial limitations prevented many consumers from making the switch.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, ZACA emphasized that only those who can afford alternative energy sources are able to make the transition easily.

“We call on the government to implement a comprehensive and affordable alternative energy source package for all citizens. This would help conserve remaining resources and combat the impact of climate change,” ZACA stated.

The association also highlighted the negative environmental impact of high energy costs, which often leads to increased tree-cutting.

ZACA stressed that addressing climate change required long-term solutions and not just called for alternative energy use.

The association urged the government to invest in alternative energy sources and allocate more resources to prepare for climate change-related challenges, such as droughts and floods, rather than waiting for these issues to arise.

ZACA also encouraged consumers to adapt to changes proactively, noting that last-minute planning is costly and that financial constraints make it difficult for many citizens to use alternative energy sources.
