About 3,575 households across the 16 Wards of Gwembe District in Southern Province are reportedly set to benefit from the government’s Cash for Work programme.

Gwembe District Commissioner, Killian Chikandula, stated that the programme aimed to address the impact of drought affecting thousands in the district.

At the programme’s launch in Gwembe on Friday, Chikandula noted that, like other districts in the province, Gwembe had experienced poor rainfall last season.

He said in statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday that the programme was intended to have a lasting impact on the lives of residents during these challenging times.

“The programme provided a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the community by engaging participants in various projects and duties such as clearing drainages, cabbage collection and maintenance of roads,” Chikandula said.

Gwembe Town Council Chairperson, Collet Ndhlovu, claimed that the Cash for Work programme was designed to tackle the pressing economic challenges faced by many families, especially during difficult times.

Ndhlovu stressed that the programme aimed to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to work and earn a fair wage for their efforts.

“By participating in this initiative, we are not only supporting our families but also the community at large,” he said.

Ndhlovu also expressed gratitude to the government for launching this initiative to assist the underprivileged.
