Chinese couple forfeits 29.9kg of gold, $200,000 cash to govt following conviction

Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate, Davies Chibwili, has ordered the forfeiture of 29.9 kilogrammes of gold, a Toyota Prado and US$200,000 in cash to the State.

This decision followed the conviction of Zhao Yanjing and Zhao Changson, a Chinese couple, for possessing property suspected of being stolen.

The couple was fined K100,000 each or, in default, sentenced to nine months in simple imprisonment.

During the hearing, the couple admitted their offense and sought leniency through their lawyers.

They argued that as first offenders, they deserved a fine rather than imprisonment, given that the offense was a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of two years.

The court considered these submissions and imposed a fine along with a prison sentence.

The case began on August 15 when police intercepted the couple’s Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, which was equipped with Zimbabwean plates.

The vehicle contained 40 pieces of gold weighing 29.9 kilograms and US$200,000 hidden in the door panels.

The forfeited items would be surrendered to the State.
