China Non-Ferrous Mining Corporation (CNMC) has announced plans to install seven additional pumps to accelerate the removal of water from Shaft 28 in Luanshya.

This development was revealed during the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where President Hakainde Hichilema held bilateral meetings with CNMC and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC).

President Hichilema highlighted that both companies expressed strong interest in maintaining and expanding their investments in Zambia.

In a statement on his official Facebook page, the President wrote, “We are particularly glad to note that CNMC is in a hurry to ensure the operationalisation of Shaft 28 in Luanshya.”

During the meeting, CNMC Chairman, Weng Gang, indicated that the installation of seven more pumps would expedite the water removal process from the mine, a crucial step towards resuming full operations.

President Hichilema reassured that the Zambian government remained committed to boosting copper production and positioning the mining sector as a cornerstone of the country’s economy.

“We look forward to more trade and investment engagements as part of our international diplomacy during such missions,” he stated.

On the sidelines of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Summit in Beijing, President Hichilema also met with Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto.

He noted that Zambia and Kenya had enjoyed warm bilateral relations for many years.

In a statement, President Hichilema said, “During our bilateral meeting, we discussed several issues of mutual interest between our two countries and people.

“Like Zambia, Kenya also faced challenges posed by climate change.”

He stated the importance of African leaders working together to enhance resilience to climate shocks, advocating for a united approach to address shared environmental challenges.
