The Zambian government has reached an agreement in principle with China’s Longi Green Energy Technology Company to develop solar energy generation and supply in Zambia.
The collaboration would focus on building solar energy infrastructure at household, institutional and national levels, with the potential to position Zambia as a regional hub for Longi Green Energy Technology Company due to its strategic location.
President Hakainde Hichilema shared the news on his official Facebook page, expressing appreciation for the positive feedback from LONGi Solar, which had shown willingness to work with the government on both short and long-term energy mix programmes.
“This afternoon, we held an energy meeting with LONGi Green Energy Technology Company, one of the leading Chinese solar companies in Xi’an City,” President Hichilema wrote.
He noted that the government was actively engaging with various partners in the energy sector to address both short and long-term energy challenges.
“On the sidelines of the Summit of the Forum on China – Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), we will continue to engage many players in the energy sector,” he added.
President Hichilema’s entourage is in China seeking solutions to Zambia’s energy needs and on Tuesday, he held bilateral discussions with a delegation from Shaanxi Province, led by Zhao Gang, Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Shaanxi Provincial Committee and Governor of Shaanxi Province.
The President reiterated that Zambia and China enjoyed a deepening comprehensive strategic partnership in development, trade, and people-to-people collaboration.

He emphasized Zambia’s eagerness to learn from China’s experience in addressing challenges like the devastating drought affecting food and energy security.
Hichilema highlighted government’s aim to transition from rain-fed agriculture to water harvesting and precision irrigation, and from hydro to solar power and green energy—areas where China has set exemplary standards.
Impressed by China’s rapid economic development, President Hichilema expressed his desire to leverage Chinese expertise to drive Zambia’s growth.
He reaffirmed Zambia’s support for China’s One China Policy and noted the upcoming 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Zambia and China, which coincides with Zambia’s own 60th anniversary of independence.
