Party leader, Chanda, knocks rural excavator training programmes

United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) leader, Charles Chanda, has called on the government to allocate a portion of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to support local farmers and promote sustainable agriculture.

Chanda said there was need for a reassessment of financial strategies, particularly concerning the CDF, to enhance national food security.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Chanda expressed concerns about the government’s current training programmes, which focused on teaching rural Zambians to operate excavators.

He questioned the practicality of such training for many in rural areas, suggesting that it may have limited daily relevance.

“While operating excavators is valuable, our priority should be initiatives that directly support our farmers and their ability to feed our households,” Chanda said.

He proposed that CDF funds be redirected to the agricultural sector, particularly for providing seeds, fertilizers and irrigation support to smallholder farmers.

“Supporting our farmers addresses food security and invests in the future of our economy and communities,” Chanda added.

He urged the government to recognise that empowering farmers was crucial for ensuring food access for all Zambians.

“It’s time we shift our focus from machinery to the soil,” Chanda concluded.
