The Socialist Party (SP) in Western Province is experiencing a wave of resignations, including that of Provincial Information and Publicity Secretary, Moonga Mubita, and District Secretary Jonathan Malichi.

In a resignation letter dated September 2, 2024, addressed to the party’s Provincial Chairperson, Mubita and Malichi did not provide reasons for their departure.

They are joined by several other members, including Mercy Anayawa (Mongu District Secretary), Chipita Lunasi (Mulambwa Ward Chairperson), Martin Chisala (Katongo Ward Chairperson), Abigail Chisala (IPS Constituency for Mongu), Kambai Ward Chairperson Bukolo Lyamba, Kambule Ward Secretary Moses Lusingo, and Chiyosa Sikute (Lewanika Ward Treasurer).

High-profile exits also included Frank Bwalya, SP spokesperson, and Crispin Chiinda, an aspiring candidate for Munali.

Bwalya cited a “propensity of self-centeredness” within the party, while Chiinda criticised the party’s intolerance to divergent views and its inability to resolve internal differences.

He reaffirmed his intention to serve as a Member of Parliament in 2026.

Andrew Sinyangwe, former Central Province Chairperson, and Gabriel Nsofwa, Vice Provincial Secretary and Kabwe District Secretary, have also resigned.

Nsofwa’s resignation, dated August 26, 2024, was reportedly prompted by the party’s failure to support grassroots mobilization efforts.

Additionally, Dr. Cosmas Musumali, Secretary-General, dismissed Deputy Secretary-General Antonio Mwanza without providing reasons.

Party Director of Research and Training Dr. Lawrence Mwelwa and National Chairperson for Mobilisation Wilson Banda also left, citing undemocratic practices and Dr. Fred M’membe’s tight grip on the party, which they expressed believe stifles creativity and punished dissent.
