A 14-year-old grade six pupil has appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court charged with the alleged killing of a five-year-old boy by striking him twice on the head with a stone.
During her court appearance, the accused admitted to hitting the boy with a stone.
However, the court had directed that her mother swear an affidavit to confirm the correct name of the girl, as discrepancies were noted between the under-five card and deposition.
Magistrate Njobvu adjourned the case to August 28 for age determination and explanation of the charge.
The girl remains in custody until the next hearing.
According to a police report, the girl was being cared for by the boy’s mother because her own aunt was doing piecework for the boy’s family.
On October 27, 2023, around 17:00 hours, the boy’s mother asked the girl to prepare tea for her son, as he did not want to play outside with his friends.
Approximately 30 minutes later, when the boy’s mother returned, she discovered her son missing and the girl sitting outside.
The girl initially claimed that the boy was playing with his friends.
The mother began searching for her son and was informed by neighbors that a child resembling her son had been seen near Chingwere, appearing to have been beaten by junkies.
She was advised to check the hospital, where she tragically found her son had died.
Upon returning home, the boy’s mother questioned the girl further.
The girl first insisted that they had gone to buy jiggies and that the boy was playing with friends.
However, when taken to the police for questioning, the girl admitted that they had visited her aunt at Chingwere.
On the way back, the boy allegedly said he did not like the girl and told her she should return to her home, where they ate vegetables without cooking oil.

Enraged by the boy’s remarks, the girl reportedly pushed him, causing him to fall onto a stone or brick.
She then picked up the stone and struck him twice on the head.
After blood began to ooze from his ears and she found him unresponsive, the girl went to the neighbors to ask for water to wash her hands.
The court case continues, with the next hearing scheduled for August 28, as the court seeks to determine the girl’s exact age and proceed with explaining the charges against her.
