Businessman, Kasanda, rearrested after State drops $5 million robbery case linked to Airport gold scandal

Businessman, Sedrick Kasanda, was rearrested just hours after the State entered a nolle prosequi in his US$5 million aggravated robbery case, which is connected to the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport gold scandal.

Kasanda expressed his frustration over what he described as “unfair persecution” by the State, particularly since Egyptian nationals involved in the scandal have failed to appear since his initial arrest a year ago.

Speaking outside the Zambia Police Service Headquarters, Kasanda stated, “I am the one who came to clear the President’s name when people said he was involved. I came here and told them the truth about the whole scandal. I was taken to explain to Levy Ngoma and also to Mr. Nyambe, Office of the President director, how things were, that the President was not involved.”

Kasanda emphasized that he acted as a whistleblower in the gold scandal and had not committed any theft, but rather provided crucial information to the State.

As of press time, Kasanda was still at Force Headquarters undergoing questioning.

However, Zambia Police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, could not provide specific details regarding his arrest and charges.

Earlier in the day, the State entered a nolle prosequi at the Lusaka High Court after failing to produce two Egyptian witnesses, including the alleged aggravated robbery victim, Michael Adel Botros.

Kasanda is also on trial with four others for espionage related to the gold scandal.
