The government has assured that construction of hostels at the University of Zambia (UNZA) would resume in the last quarter of this year.
Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, announced that the Ministry had been awaiting guidance from the office of the Attorney-General concerning the interest claimed by the contractor and the results of a forensic audit.
Speaking to journalists after a tour of UNZA on Friday, Syakalima explained that the contractor had been demanding interest due to the prolonged delay in the project, necessitating government negotiations.
“We were waiting for guidance from the Attorney-General’s office on the negotiations concerning the interest demanded by the contractor,” Syakalima said.
He further mentioned that the Ministry was awaiting the results of the forensic audit, which was conducted to verify the legitimacy of the contractor’s claims.
Syakalima confirmed that communication had been received from the Attorney-General’s office and construction would resume soon.
He also noted that the audit had been completed, which would expedite the process compared to previous delays.
“The construction of hostels at the University of Zambia stalled long before the New Dawn government came into power, for about 10 to 15 years,” Syakalima remarked.
