The World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature Zambia has called for innovations in sustainable transportation, emphasizing the need to reduce emissions and promote eco-friendly alternatives.

Country Director, Nalucha Ziba, highlighted the importance of electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as the development of efficient public transportation systems, as examples of climate change-related innovations in the sector.

Ziba made these remarks during the launch of the third edition of the Pachipanda Innovation Challenge in Lusaka on Friday.

She also stressed the need for climate-smart agricultural practices and technologies, such as precision agriculture techniques and drought-resistant crop varieties.

“Agroforestry systems and water-efficient irrigation methods aim to enhance agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impacts,” Ziba said.

She said that climate change-related innovations were crucial for developing sustainable solutions to mitigate and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.

Ziba encouraged young people to create game-changing eco-smart innovations for a greener and sustainable Zambia.

“The Pachipanda Innovation Challenge is a youth-driven initiative, demonstrated by our target audience: young people aged 16 to 35 and youth-led SMEs,” Ziba said.

She underscored the importance of recognising young people as powerful agents of change who deserve empowerment and support to realise their full potential in decision-making.

In the wake of climate change, Ziba noted, youths are key drivers of change due to their significant influence in climate activism, advocacy for climate action, and driving innovation and sustainable solutions.

Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Nkandu, welcomed the initiative and underscored the need to enhance conservation awareness campaigns in Zambia amid the climate change crisis.

“In this regard, the government supports innovations such as the Pachipanda Innovation Challenge that seeks to find climate-smart solutions to this global issue,” Nkandu said.

Rose Sibisi, Chairperson of MTN Zambia Foundation, stated that the initiative, a joint effort by MTN and WWF, exemplified a commitment to fostering sustainable solutions across Africa while harnessing the power of technology.
