Enhanced partnerships between the government and stakeholders are needed to monitor the activities of cooperatives across various sectors to ensure they remain operational, particularly in rural areas.

This call was made by John Shamputa, the Provincial Executive Director for Lusaka Province at the Farmers Development Cooperative Union, during an interview with journalists on Friday.

Shamputa emphasized the importance of these partnerships in ensuring that cooperatives were effectively functioning.

“Government has been encouraging the formation of cooperatives so they can benefit from empowerment projects implemented by the government and other stakeholders,” Shamputa said.

He stressed that close monitoring would help improve transparency and accountability in the performance of these cooperatives across different sectors.

Shamputa noted that over the years, both the government and stakeholders had struggled to track the resources and performance of cooperatives due to inadequate monitoring.

He expressed believe that stronger collaboration between the government and stakeholders would enhance the oversight of cooperatives, ultimately promoting greater transparency and accountability.
