The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has lifted the bench warrant issued against National Democratic Congress (NDC) President Saboi Imboela for failing to appear in court.

Imboela was arrested and detained on Friday after missing a court appearance on Wednesday, where she faces libel charges against State House media director, Clayson Hamasaka.

In court on Thursday, Imboela attributed her absence to a medical condition and apologized for not attending the August 6 hearing.

Her surety, Hildah Namwinga, confirmed that Imboela had informed her of the illness and the need for medical attention.

The court expressed doubt about the timing of Imboela’s sick note and her history of court absences.

However, after considering her apology and the circumstances, the court discharged the bench warrant and extended her police bond, contingent on her continued cooperation.

The case had been adjourned to September 10 for further defense proceedings.
