Zambia has decided to reopen its borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after fruitful engagements in Lubumbashi.
In communique issued on Tuesday by Ministry of Commerce,Trade and Industry Public Relations Officer, Musanda Kangwa, the countries have resolved to end the impasse.
“It has been resolved that the government of the Republic of Zambia will open the closed border Posts at Sakania, Mokambo and Kasumbalesa today, 13 August, 2024, in the morning while the DRC will lift all the trade restriction orders on Zambia, effective same date, (today),” it stated.
The communique further revealed that a joint technical committee of both Ministries would be urgently constituted to review the 2015 bilateral trade agreement of the two countries within 30 days.
The bilateral meeting between the Ministers of Trade and Commerce of Zambia and the DRC that was held on August 12, 2024, in Lubumbashi, DRC, ended around 20:00 hours.
The closures were prompted by violent protests that erupted in response to the DRC’s ban on beverage and lime imports.
The DRC recently imposed a 12-month ban on the importation of beverages, including beers and soft drinks, as well as lime, as part of an effort to boost local manufacturing. However, this move sparked violent protests in the border areas with Zambia.
