National Democratic Congress (NDC) president, Saboi Imboela, will remain in detention until August 20 following her arrest last Friday for contempt of court.

Imboela faces two counts of libel for allegedly posting defamatory statements against State House Media Director, Clayson Hamasaka, on her Facebook page between September 9 and 10, 2022.

Despite pleading not guilty, the court found she had a case to answer after the prosecution closed its case.

Magistrate Silvia Munyinya issued a warrant for Imboela’s arrest on August 6 after she failed to appear in court, leading to her detention.

On Monday, Imboela was brought before the court, but Magistrate Munyinya refused to hear the case, stating that it was not scheduled for that day.

She stated that the case should follow proper legal procedures and would be addressed on the scheduled date of August 20.

Imboela had been returned to detention until then.
