The Zambia Police have placed a K2 million bounty on the fugitive Petauke Central lawmaker, Emmanuel Banda, who is currently facing charges of aggravated robbery and attempted murder.

Banda escaped from lawful custody while receiving treatment at Chipata General Hospital in Eastern Province.

“The Zambia police is urgently seeking the whereabouts of Jay Emmanuel Banda who is currently facing charges of aggravated robbery and attempted murder. The suspect escaped from lawful custody while admitted at Chipata General Hospital,” read the police notice of wanted person.

His whereabouts remain unknown. On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, announced that security agencies were making significant progress in the manhunt for Banda.

“Banda, who escaped from lawful custody, is believed to be hiding within neighborhoods where he may easily be apprehended,” Mweetwa stated.

He also disclosed that one of Banda’s wives is currently being interrogated by police in connection to his escape, contrary to social media reports claiming she had been arrested.

“While receiving treatment in hospital, Hon. Emmanuel Jay Banda escaped from lawful custody three days ago, and his whereabouts remain unknown,” Mweetwa added.

He assured the public that the government was utilising all available resources to ensure Banda was brought back into custody, emphasizing that as a Zambian citizen, he was subject to the law.

“Hon. Jay Banda is not being treated differently and will be pursued just like any other fugitive,” Mweetwa emphasized.

Mweetwa expressed concern that a lawmaker, who should lead by example, had chosen to break the law by escaping from custody.

He further revealed that investigations indicate Banda’s escape was well-orchestrated, with several individuals involved in the plot.

“The MP was aided in his escape, and police are closing in on all those who were involved,” Mweetwa stated.
