The Ministry of Agriculture says it is leveraging the ongoing commercial show in Lusaka to educate farmers on integrating smart agricultural farming methodologies into their practices.
For Lusaka Province, the focus is reportedly on sustainable farming practices in response to climate change and drought, which threatens food security in the country.
The Lusaka Provincial Agricultural Information Officer, Lauren Mukuka, in an interview with Zambia Monitor at the 96th Agricultural and Commercial Show, said that farmers were being taught climate change mitigation measures and provided with information on drought-resistant crops.
“We are encouraging our farmers to adopt sustainable practices by incorporating smart agricultural technologies. We are guiding them step-by-step on how to mitigate climate change challenges, including conservation agriculture, which allows them to utilise resources sustainably for future use,” Mukuka said.
Additionally, she highlighted the introduction of drone technology to farmers, showcasing its potential future use in farming practices.
“We ensure our farmers interact with various stakeholders to add value to their produce, fostering agribusiness and increasing household income. We are promoting technology like drones, aiming for a future where farmers can use advanced tools to produce sustainably,” she said.
