Nurses union backs calls for comprehensive probe of medical procurement system in Zambia

The Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation (ZUNMO) has called for urgent action to strengthen the procurement systems for medicines and medical supplies in Zambia.

Union President, Frey Michelo, expressed concern over recent revelations involving the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), which have cast doubts on the system’s integrity.

In a statement on Friday, Michelo highlighted the troubling diversion of 61 containers of medicines and medical supplies to a private facility instead of the ZAMMSA warehouse.

He emphasized the persistent challenges facing ZAMMSA, including drug expirations and wastage of taxpayers’ money.

“Over the years, significant resources have been channeled towards improving service delivery and strengthening health systems in our country,” Michelo said.

However, these efforts are being undermined by ongoing procurement issues that need immediate resolution.

Michelo recalled that last year, ZUNMO welcomed ZAMMSA’s announcement of plans to streamline its procurement processes and audit its systems.

“This pronouncement gave us renewed hope for a positive turnaround in the procurement of medicines and medical supplies,” he said.

The recent unauthorised action raises numerous questions and concerns that demand immediate and thorough investigation.

ZUNMO supports calls for a comprehensive investigation to establish the facts and hold those responsible accountable.

“The health and well-being of Zambians depend on a reliable and efficient supply of medicines and medical supplies,” Michelo said.

He reaffirmed ZUNMO’s commitment to advocating for stronger procurement systems to ensure essential resources are managed with integrity and efficiency.
