Govt denies claims Hichilema administration plotting secrete constitutional amendments

Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, has denied that there were no covert constitutional amendments being planned by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mweetwa stated that any constitutional amendment would result from consensus between Parliament and the citizens of the country.

He refuted these allegations in Lusaka on Wednesday during the launch of the Ministry’s 2022-2026 strategic plan, M&E Framework, and MIM mobile app.

Mweetwa, who is also Information and Media Minister added that no constitutional amendment would be made solely by the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).

“We are a government that is community and demand driven and we shall continue to do so,” the minister said.

Mweetwa attributed this to government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, including advancing the enactment of the Access to Information Bill.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the ministry would not shut any media house on political grounds.

“The Ministry of Information and Media, through this plan, will continue to protect the media,” he assured.
