Former ACC chairperson, Mwenye, granted leave to pursue contempt charges against lawmaker Mabeta

Musa Mwenye, the former chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) board, has been granted leave to commence contempt of court proceedings against Kankoyo UPND Member of Parliament, Heartson Mabeta, before the Lusaka High Court.

Mabeta alleged that Mwenye intimidated a judge to end an out-of-court settlement between Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and its creditors, aiming to benefit from a $3 million commission.

These allegations were reportedly made on social media shortly after President Hakainde Hichilema dissolved the ACC board.

Mwenye denied the allegations, stating they were malicious and unfounded.

Mabeta claimed that Mwenye wanted the High Court to order KCM to pay $33 million to Copperbelt Energy Corporation so he could receive a $3 million commission.

In a demand letter, Mwenye refuted these claims, asserting that he never demanded a commission from Copperbelt Energy Company Plc nor intimidated any judge or adjudicator.

Justice Kafunda granted Mwenye leave to apply for an order that Mabeta be committed to prison for issuing and publishing defamatory statements.
