Police in Chongwe District have shot and wounded one suspected criminal while another escaped uninjured.

Danny Mwale, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, said the two were believed to be among other suspects who hide in Chongwe after committing crimes in Lusaka.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, Mwale said the suspects had been on the police wanted list for various criminal offenses.

These offenses included obtaining K820,000 by false pretenses from three people in Lusaka.

“Police officers in Chongwe, who had the description of the suspects and the Toyota Mark X they were using, spotted them in Mwalongo village area,” Mwale said.

He stated that the suspects sped off after noticing the police presence, but officers gave chase and deflated their rear tires before the suspects abandoned their vehicle and ran away.

Mwale said one suspect, identified as Arnold Namushi, aged 20, was hit by bullets and sustained wounds on his left thigh and left arm.

He was rushed to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.

“Officers searched the motor vehicle, bearing registration number BAP 8246, and found assorted documents including signed letters of sale of land,” Mwale said, adding that these documents are suspected to be used in the commission of crimes.

Mwale stated that the shooting incident occurred on July 11, 2024, around 18:00 hours, and that the vehicle was parked at the police station awaiting further investigations.

“A manhunt for the other suspect has been launched,” he indicated.
