22 arrested for illegal drug possession, trafficking

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested 22 individuals for various offenses related to drug trafficking and possession of controlled substances.

According to DEC Public Relations Officer, Allan Tamba, the commission apprehended Remmy Mutambo, a 44-year-old male, at Luangwa Bridge in Mafinga District for possessing dry loose cannabis hidden in a polythene sack, along with 51 rolls cleverly concealed in dry banana leaves.

The total weight of the confiscated contraband amounted to 120 kilogrammes.

In another operation within Muchinga Province, Kennedy Sinkala, a 35-year-old male from Tusunkane Village in Isoka District, was arrested for trafficking 6.4 kilograms of dry loose cannabis.

“Meanwhile, DEC in Copperbelt Province arrested 15 individuals responsible for distributing drugs in the streets and among school-going children,” Tamba stated.

The suspects were found with over 12 kilogrammes of dry loose cannabis and 980 tablets of Benzhexol, a controlled drug commonly referred to as BH5 or Artane.

Among those arrested was Ruth Kabanga, a 33-year-old female from Nyati Road, Chabanyama Compound, Chingola, who was found with 10.5 kilogrammes of dry loose cannabis.

Another suspect, Mulenga Chama, a 30-year-old female from Kamilenda township in Luanshya, was arrested with nine bottles of Benylin with Codeine, 1.51 kilogrammes of compressed high-grade cannabis and 500 tablets of Benzhexol.

“Another notable arrest involved Josphat Kang’umbu, a 28-year-old male, who was jointly charged with three other persons for illegal possession of 30 tablets of Benzhexol,” Tamba added.

Additionally, along the Mazabuka-Lusaka road, DEC officers intercepted a minibus en route to Choma and discovered 92 sachets of high-grade cannabis, weighing 166 grams, cleverly concealed in a mortice lock box wrapped in a shirt.

The drugs were linked to Maxwel Chibele, a 22-year-old male from Pemba, and Peter Katema, a 23-year-old male, who were jointly charged and arrested for trafficking in psychotropic substances.

“In Livingstone, DEC arrested John Mwamba, a 23-year-old notorious drug supplier from Malota compound, for possessing 728 tablets of Benzhexol,” Tamba concluded.
