The United Party for National Development (UPND) has affirmed that the future of Zambia’s citizens is economically secure, thanks to policies being implemented across the country through various empowerment programmes.
This statement came in response to Vedanta’s announcement of arranging US$250 million for disbursement to Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) creditors.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Party Secretary-General, Batuke Imenda, lauded the move, highlighting that it was not only a significant injection into the economy but also added momentum to the country’s overall economic development.
“It is also a confirmation that the United Party for National Development (UPND) government is on course to fulfilling its party manifesto for economic development, partly through the revitalization of the mines,” Imenda stated.
He emphasized that President Hakainde Hichilema was committed to ensuring that Zambians reap the full benefits of their natural resources.
“The disbursement of the US$250 million is a reassuring statement that the UPND is fully committed not only to the people of the Copperbelt but the nation at large,” he mentioned.
Imenda further stated that the liquidation of the legacy debt underscored the party’s unwavering commitment to reviving the country’s economy, which had been left in a dire state by the previous government.
“The US$250 million is in addition to the over US$1.2 billion pumped into Mopani over three months ago. The Copperbelt is on the move,” he added.
He assured the public that the UPND government had everything under control and that there was no cause for concern.
“Your future is well secure with the sound economic policies being implemented across the country through various empowerment programmes,” he stressed.
“The increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) of a whopping K31.6 million and expanded FISP are just two of the many programmes lifting people out of poverty amidst numerous national and global challenges,” he reiterated.
