Taxpayers registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) in Zambia have been given a grace period until September 30, 2024, to integrate their operations into the Smart Invoice System, announced the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

The grace period effectively defers enforcement of penalties related to non-compliance with the Smart Invoice System regulations until the end of September this year.

The electronic invoicing system, officially launched by Finance and National Planning Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, on March 19, 2024, became mandatory starting July 1, 2024.

ZRA Commissioner-General, Dingani Banda, clarified during an announcement in Lusaka that standard penalties would be enforced for non-compliance starting October 1, 2024.

“Taxpayers opting for desktop or online solutions during the grace period must ensure registration and consistent use of the Smart Invoice System,” Banda emphasized.

Yvonne Mwanza, Project Manager of the Smart Invoice System, highlighted its objective to expedite VAT refunds and enhance revenue administration by curbing leaks in identified tax types.

The Smart Invoice System is a pivotal initiative aimed at bolstering revenue integrity and optimising service delivery within Zambia’s tax administration.
