The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) in Northern Province says it has released about K105 million to commercial banks to pay farmers in the province.

This was meant for farmers who supplied maize to the agency in the current marketing season.

FRA Northern Province Marketing Coordinator, Timothy Chanda, said an additional K119 million was expected to be paid to more farmers soon.

Chanda stated that the release of money showed the agency’s commitment to pay out all farmers who supplied the maize to the various depots.

“This payment is a testament to our commitment to settling our obligations to farmers in a timely manner.

“We are committed to ensuring that farmers receive their payments on time, and we will continue to work with banks to ensure that our payment systems are efficient and effective,” said Chanda.

He said the province was expected to secure about 190 metric tonnes of maize, with about 30 percent of that amount already received.

“The FRA’s payment to banks for maize suppliers is a significant development for the agriculture sector in Zambia, which is a major contributor to the country’s economy,” Chanda said.
