Zambia to host 26th SADC Meeting on politics, defence and security cooperation

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has announced that Zambia will host the 26th Meeting of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation.

The Ministry indicated that the meeting would focus on promoting and maintaining peace and security in the SADC region, which was essential for achieving socio-economic development, poverty eradication, and regional integration.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, the Ministry informed the public that the meeting would be chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe.

“The MCO will discuss, among other things, the political and security situation and the strengthening of democratic processes in the SADC region,” the statement read.

It also stated that the MCO meeting would be preceded by a meeting of Senior Officials of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation from 8th to 9th July, 2024.

“This forthcoming meeting is particularly significant as it is taking place under the leadership of President Hichilema,” the statement further indicated.

The Ministry highlighted that the decisions made during this meeting would be presented at the SADC Heads of State and Government Summit.

Additionally, President Hichilema is scheduled to hand over the Chairmanship of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation to the United Republic of Tanzania at the 44th Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government, which would be held in Harare, Zimbabwe, in August 2024.
