Zambia set to launch Artificial Intelligence strategy, says Minister Mutati

Technology and Science Minister, Felix Mutati, has announced that Zambia will launch its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy on Independence Day this year, marking a significant step towards powering the nation’s economy with AI.

Mutati highlighted that the launch of the AI strategy at Zambia’s 60th Independence anniversary would symbolize a new era for the country, emphasizing productivity and efficiency enhancements rather than job displacement.

Speaking at the Corporate Governance Conference and Gala Awards organized by the Institute of Directors in Livingstone, Mutati mentioned collaboration with the Tony Blair Institute and the Finnish Government in developing the AI Strategy.

“Artificial Intelligence has come to promote productivity and efficiency. It has not come to take away your jobs, but to enhance your work,” he affirmed.

Additionally, Mutati disclosed government plans for a startup bill aimed at fostering entrepreneurship, including the establishment of a venture capital fund to support startups across Zambia.

Institute of Directors President, Edward Kabwe, highlighted the bill’s significance in promoting corporate governance, expressing optimism about its impact on board effectiveness once tabled in parliament.

“The institute is also working on a memorandum of understanding with the Industrial Development Corporation to further enhance corporate governance in the private sector,” Kabwe added.
