The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) has described as reckless and irresponsible the declaration of nine vacant seats of the Patriotic Front (PF) lawmakers.
On July 3, 2024, Moses Moyo, the Second Vice Speaker of Parliament, declared a record nine seats belonging to the opposition Patriotic Front vacant.
Sakwiba Sikota, the UKA Chairperson, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, accused the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) of orchestrating a project to dismantle the former ruling party.
“Currently, our country needs revitalized, efficient and effective strategies in our education and health systems to produce generations of well-trained, healthy and competitive human capital and an upper middle class citizenry,” Sikota said.
He stated that was where Zambia’s priorities in terms of expenditure should be directed, not towards “senseless” by-elections.
Sikota alleged that for almost three years in government, the UPND had continued to be wasteful with meager public resources.
“The creation of unnecessary expenditure such as the currently declared by-elections is a testament to the UPND’s uncaring attitude towards our people in the dispensation of governance,” he stated.
He claimed that this was clearly a danger to state security and the well-being of future generations.
“As UKA, we urge our voting citizens to appropriately express discontent with this kind of irresponsibility by a wasteful and uncaring government, the legitimacy of which has not been earned through respect and fulfillment of the terms of the social contract, which terms are abrogated on a daily basis,” Sikota said.
