Police have announced that 319 road traffic accidents (RTAs) were recorded during the long weekend, resulting in 27 deaths from 25 fatal accidents.
Danny Mwale, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, reported that there were 42 serious injury accidents, with 78 people sustaining serious injuries.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Mwale stated that 67 RTAs were recorded as slight injury accidents, with 131 people slightly injured, and 185 accidents resulted in damage only.
“Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of RTAs with 106, while Copperbelt and Central recorded 57 and 38 accidents respectively,” he highlighted.
Mwale added that North-Western Province had 26 accidents, Southern 21, and Eastern and Muchinga Provinces each recorded 18 RTAs.

Luapula recorded 14, Northern had 11 and Western recorded 10 accidents.
“During the same period in 2023, Police recorded 308 RTAs, including 18 fatal accidents resulting in 28 deaths, while 41 were recorded as serious injury accidents, with 109 people seriously injured,” Mwale stated.
Additionally, police collected K694,835.00 in Admission of Guilt fines during the long weekend.
He noted that during the same period in 2023, police collected K585,300.
“Most of the RTAs recorded were attributed to low compliance levels by motorists and motorcyclists,” Mwale stated.
