Mozambique, Zambia call for enhanced trade, collaboration in harnessing critical minerals

Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, has emphasised the need for Mozambique and Zambia to collaborate on harnessing critical mineral resources.

Speaking at the opening of the 58th Zambia International Trade Fair in Ndola, President Nyusi, on a three-day visit, said: “My country is making inroads in enhancing power generation and others which is helping the country becoming a net exporter of electricity.”

He highlighted the importance of tapping into the countries’ mineral potential and improving trade.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema also called for enhanced trade engagements to boost economic growth and cooperation.

Hichilema said that after coming into power, his government had embarked on “economic reconstruction and installed the rule of law,” aiming to create jobs and support the social sector.

Both leaders noted the potential in sectors such as agriculture, construction, energy and tourism.

Despite some progress, President Nyusi bemoaned the erratic trade between the two countries.

He noted that trade volumes increased from US$32 million in 2018 to US$116 million, but that more needed to be done to boost the trade numbers.

He added: “It is encouraging that the two countries have been collaborating in many areas, especially in developing trade.”

Zambia International Trade Fair Trust (ZITFT) Board Chairperson, Elizabeth Nkumbula, spoke on the significance of holding the Trade Fair during one of the country’s worst droughts stating, “We recognise government and private sector support which has helped us to manage the staging of this successful show.”
