Nine Sensele mine tragedy victims buried in Chingola, as hundreds pay respect

President Hakainde Hichilema is deeply saddened by the continued loss of lives in mining accidents, Copperbelt Minister, Elisha Matambo, said during the mass burial of the Sensele mine tragedy victims.

Nine bodies that were recently retrieved were laid to rest in a mass burial at Chingola Central Cemetery on Saturday, amid outpouring of emotions as bereaved families broke down.

Matambo, alongside Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, and senior government officials, joined hundreds of mourners to honor the nine additional victims of the Sensele Mine accident.

The burial of the nine victims at Chingola Central Cemetery brings the total number of retrieved bodies and those buried in the mass grave to 23, with one survivor.

“Our President (Hichilema) is sending a message of condolences to the bereaved families, Copperbelt residents and the entire country during this sad moment,” Matambo told mourners.

He paid tribute to the technical recovery team, local small-scale miners and the clergy for their tireless efforts to ensure more bodies were recovered and given a befitting send-off.

“As a government, we are determined to ensure that all the remaining bodies from sites 2 and 3 will be retrieved and buried in a dignified manner,” he stated.

Kabuswe assured the affected families and local small-scale miners that the government would find safer ways of mining to preserve human life.
