Patriots for Economic Progress (PEP) leader, Sean Tembo, has issued a counter-demand letter to President Hakainde Hichilema’s Political Advisor Levy Ngoma, seeking an apology and K50 million for defamation.
Ngoma had earlier reported Tembo, National Democratic Congress leader, Saboi Imboela, United Liberal Party leader, Sakwiba Sikota, and Petauke Central lawmaker, Emmanuel Banda, to the police for allegedly tarnishing his reputation and causing public ridicule, demanding K5 million in compensation.
In a letter dated June 5, 2024, Tembo demanded that Ngoma retract his allegations and issue an apology within 72 hours.
“PEP is a political party duly registered in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Zambia, whose role is to provide checks and balances to the Government of the day,” Tembo stated.
He said the demands were in response to the injury caused to his reputation and standing in society.
Tembo described himself as an aspiring candidate for the Republican Presidency, a businessman and a family man of high repute, asserting that the allegations against him constituted defamation.
“It is our position that quoting a statement made by another person is not and cannot constitute defamation and any elementary student of law, including yourself, should know that,” Tembo stated.
During a media briefing in Lusaka, Ngoma asserted that statements made by Imboela, Tembo, Sikota and Banda had damaged his reputation and caused public ridicule, leading him to seek legal recourse.
He demanded an apology from Sikota and others within 72 hours, along with a payment of K5 million as compensation for the defamatory statements.
Ngoma disclosed that he had reported the individuals to the authorities to substantiate their claims with evidence.
