‘Scandalous, intimidating,’ Catholic Bishops condemn police action against Bishop Mulenga, Lungu

The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has disapproved of the recent police conduct towards Bishop, Clement Mulenga, and former president, Edgar Lungu.

The incident occurred on May 17, 2024, when Lungu paid a courtesy call on Bishop Mulenga in Kabwe District of Central Province.

In a letter to President Hakainde Hichilema, the ZCCB expressed deep displeasure, describing the police actions as “incredibly scandalous and intimidating.”

ZCCB President, Father Ignitius Chama, condemned what he described as the unwarranted invasion of the Bishop’s privacy.

Chama emphasized that the Church, particularly its leaders, had the right to welcome and listen to all individuals without discrimination, fulfilling its spiritual mission.

“Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28),” he cited the scripture.

Chama stressed that even in a nation not formally designated as Christian, it is normal for individuals with various challenges to seek solace in the Church.

He condemned the intimidation and violation of privacy experienced by the Church’s prelates and their premises.

Chama reminded the state of the Church’s diplomatic relationship with the government and called for respect and dignity towards Church premises and ministers.

“We urge President Hichilema and his administration to ensure that such incidents do not recur,” he advised.

Chama requested that the rightful dignity and autonomy of the Church be upheld, free from intimidation and unwarranted invasions.

He said the appeal underscored the need for a harmonious relationship between the state and religious institutions, advocating for mutual respect and the protection of individual rights within Zambia.
