The Zambia Police Service has apprehended a male suspect from Kabwata Site and Service for fraudulently obtaining K361,777.

The suspect, identified as Wisdom Maseka, a 48-year-old resident of house number CH1 at Kabwata Site and Service in Lusaka, was arrested following multiple complaints.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, stated that Maseka had falsely claimed to be the Director of Guangzhou Roofing Company and had collected money from his victims under the pretense of supplying iron sheets, which he failed to deliver.

“On May 20, 2024, 25 individuals came forward with complaints against a suspect known as Wisdom Maseka,” Hamoonga said.

He added that the total amount defrauded from the 25 complainants amounted to K361,777.

“These fraudulent activities occurred between January 2024 and May 2024 at Buseko Market in Lusaka,” he pointed out.

According to Hamoonga, the complainants made payments to Maseka in the expectation of receiving iron sheets.

“However, each time the complainants visited the shop at Buseko Market to collect their goods, Maseka was not present or evaded them,” he stated.

The victims eventually reported the matter to the police after being frustrated by Maseka’s actions.

Hamoonga further indicated that the suspect was detained at Matero Police Station and would appear in court to face charges related to the fraudulent activities.

“We urge anyone who may have fallen victim to similar schemes or who has further information regarding this case to come forward and assist with our ongoing investigation,” he said.
