United Party for National Development Chairperson for Labour and Social Security, Godfrey Beene, has taken a swipe at the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) members.
While praising them for forming an alliance, he claimed they were social media political tigers still uncertain about their direction.
“So, ba UKA, encourage more of your social media political tigers to join you so that we don’t waste resources on printing unnecessary ballot papers for the 2026 presidential and general elections,” Beene said.
The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has called on the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) to formalise and legalise the formation of their association.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, Beene encouraged UKA to form a legal alliance.
He said this would reduce the burden on electoral officials in preparing and announcing long lists of results.
“We have to safeguard the national treasury even as we uphold constitutional guarantees for the freedom of association and that of speech,” Beene advised.
He expressed hope that more “small parties” such as those in UKA would unite to prevent wastage of resources on printing unnecessarily long ballot papers.
Beene stated that legal alliances of “small political” formations would also shorten the announcement of election results, reducing periods of anxiety and potential blood pressure-related conditions for the losers.
“This shall reduce periods of anxiety and possible blood pressure-related conditions for the losers. We have to safeguard the national treasury even as we uphold constitutional guarantees for the freedom of association and that of speech,” he said.
Beene encouraged the formation of such alliances to ensure people can express themselves with a significant voice.
He stated that UPND cherishes democracy and would uphold its principles by encouraging more voices in the nation’s political landscape.
He assured that President Hakainde Hichilema was committed to providing political space for the opposition as he focused on delivering beyond 2026.
