Manufacturers call for government-led local procurement initiatives

The Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) has urged the government to spearhead the procurement of goods and services under the proudly Zambian campaign.

ZAM president, Ashu Saga, said the government-led procurement initiatives would incentivize even large private entities to prioritize sourcing locally.

He spoke at the local content conference and exposition in Lusaka on Thursday, themed “Actualising Local Content Through Localised Procurement.

Saga noted that vetted products from companies committed to high-quality standards were readily available.

“For instance, in the Textile sector, if the government procures uniforms for the defense forces, hospitals, and schools locally, it would significantly empower businesses in the industry,” Saga stated.

Similarly, in the mining sector, Saga noted that local companies capable of supplying various high-quality goods and services stood to benefit greatly, especially with the facilitation of supplier development programmes.

Regarding the conference and mini-exposition, Saga said its purpose was promotion of local content through fostering business linkages between public and private sector players.

Lillian Bwalya, representing the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, and Industry Permanent Secretary, Chipoka Mulenga, underscored the event’s significance.

“By prioritizing the purchase of goods and services from local suppliers, we not only stimulate economic growth but also empower our citizens,” Mulenga said.

He highlighted government’s commitment to decentralised public procurement to ensure inclusivity.

“In the mining sector, we are collaborating with stakeholders to realise preferential procurement,” Mulenga added.

He said government was dedicated to promoting local businesses and ensuring equitable economic benefits for all Zambians.
